Myth: You don't need life insurance when you are young.
Fact: If someone you care about relies on your income and you are no longer there to provide it, you need life insurance. Also life insurance rates are based on your age and health, so lock in your rates early.
Myth: I have no debts, I don't need life insurance.
Fact: Life insurance is an efficient way to pay off capital gains obligations on assets like investments and second homes.
Myth: I don't need more life insurance, I bought mortgage insurance.
Fact: Mortgage insurance will pay off your mortgage only, it will not provide income for all the other expenses for your family. It is designed to cover your obligation to the bank and reduces as you pay down your mortgage.
Myth: I have enough life insurance coverage from my work.
Fact: Most group benefits life insurance coverage is minimal and may not even be enough to cover your celebration of life.
Myth: I am covered at work through Worksafe.
Fact: If you get hurt outside work hours, you will have no coverage . Worksafe does not cover non work related illnesses as well.
Myth: My work has group disability coverage for me.
Fact: If you are a high wage earner, the coverage may not be enough to replace your income.
Myth: I am saving money and am self insured in case of disability.
Fact: Most people do not have enough saved to cover a serious disability for the rest of their working lives.
Myth: If I got sick, I would just cash in my RRSP's and use that money.
Fact: Because RRSP's are taxed in the year they are withdrawn, you could pay as much as half of the withdrawal in taxes. A serious illness of 6 months can delay your retirement by 15 years.
Myth: I lead a healthy life, I won't get sick.
Fact: Being healthy lowers your chance of getting ill but healthy people get sick every day.
Myth: My partner could stay home and take care of me.
Fact: These days, most families need both incomes to cover the bills. Critical illness insurance can help pay for time for both partners to replace income while you recover.
Myth: Canada has great medical coverage, I would be taken care of.
Fact: While it is true that Canadians have coverage for doctors visits and hospital stays, there are gaps in coverage. Items like prescription drugs, paramedical services like Physio and Registered Massage. Therapists are not covered. Most do not get dental, vision and travel insurance coverage as well.
Myth: I get money back on my taxes for my extended health benefits I don't need Health and Dental insurance.
Fact: The tax credits are minimal , they add up to 15% of what you paid out.
Myth: If I get sick and need expensive medications, I will get it then.
Fact: There are underwriting questions at application. They will not cover existing medications on a new personal plan. Also, if you are self employed or a business owner, the premiums are an expense for your company- saving you tax!
Myth: When I retire, my government pensions will take care of me.
Fact: Yes, Canada has the CPP OAS and GIS pensions. They were never meant to take care of all your living expenses in retirement but they do get you part way there.
Myth: : TFSA's and RRSP's are savings accounts held at a bank.
Fact: TFSA's and all registered plans are just tax efficient places to put a variety of investments and can hold a number of assets for both short and long term goals. I can help create the right mix for you.
Myth: All investments are risky.
